Ask The Mattress Expert:

What is the best mattress?

Tiffany D.

Great question Tiffany! Thank you for taking the time to inquire about such an important topic. I will do my best to make this simple, especially considering how difficult the industry has made it.

When starting the process of shopping for a new mattress set most people go straight to the internet these days. I do it for many products that I buy. However, I have found in my 20 years in this industry that the web can be your best friend or your worst enemy when it comes to researching mattresses. Let me explain. While the internet does have a considerable amount of information on bedding, it is usually biased information direct from the manufacturer. If you are on Tempur-pedic’s website they would have you believe that they have the only opton for your needs. The same is true of Sealy Posturpedic, Simmons Beautyrest, Serta I comfort, Stearns and Foster and so on. On the other hand independent sleep related sites you are at the mercy of one person’s opinion. What I have found is that mattresses are such a subjective item you really have to get out and try it for yourself.

I do realize that going to a brick and mortar store or a gallery of mattresses can also be an experience that can cause anxiety. That is why I suggest you start your research on the opposite end of the purchase. Instead of researching pillowtops, eurotops, coils, gel springs ect. How about doing research on which mattress company in your town has the best:

  • Customer Reviews
  • BBB A+ Rating
  • Delivery Options
  • Most Qualified Sales Associates

Maybe try a local company that has been in business for several years. Some companies go as far as working with local doctors, chiropractors and other health professionals to learn how to provide excellent service to their customers. The way I see it is if a company has all of that going for it they probably have the research on the best brands. As a result they have the proper credentials. When you do this type of research will help you avoid biased information and allow you to go into the buying experience knowing you are in good hands. The more confident you are while shopping the easier it will be to find the right mattress and foundation.

With that said I will give you a list of what I feel are some of the best brands in comfort, quality and support. There are in no specific order:

  • Sealy Posturepedic
  • Stearns and Foster
  • Tempur-pedic
  • Jamison Marriot Bed
  • Englander Resort and Hotel Collections
  • Magniflex
  • Hastens
  • Vi Spring E.S. Kluft
  • Wellsville by Malouf
  • Simmons Beautyrest
  • Symbol Mattress Co.
  • Restonic
  • Kingsdown

Personal Favorite Models:

  • Cloud Supreme
  • Cloud Lux
  • Cloud Summer Breeze
  • Marriot Core
  • Wellsville 14” Hybrid
  • Biltmore Bamboo
  • Estate Pillowtop
  • Estate Reserve Pillowtop
  • Estate Cushion Firm
  • Tempur Flex
  • Crown Estate
  • Posturepedic

Great Styles to Consider:

  • Memory Foam
  • Hybrid
  • Luxury Hybrid
  • Pillowtop
  • Plush
  • Cushion Firm
  • Latex
  • Gel
  • Eurotop
  • Firm
  • Luxury Firm
  • Marriott Core
  • Contour

Good Luck Tiffany and feel free to email me once you have found the right mattress and foundation combo. I would like to hear your thoughts on the experience.

This was post was very interesting. I started my search with name brands, reviews, coils vs foam, store vs online purchase etc…. I will say it got confusing very quick. After reading this I did exactly what you said and researched several local companies and found a great mattress company to do business with. They were even having a big blowout inventory clearance sale event that was awesome. I purchased a Stearns and Foster mattress for my master bedroom. I also got a great price on a Sealy Pillowtop Hybrid with gel for my son. Thanks Mattress Expert!

Thanks Mattress Expert! I found this blog extremely helpful. You are absolutely right about researching the mattress stores before anything else. It make perfect sense that a company with an A+ BBB rating and a history of working with chiropractors would have more insight as far as Best Mattress brands are concerned. I started my research with Tempur-Pedic Cloud and then on to the Tempur-Flex which led to research on Hybrid mattresses and Gel mattresses. Then I started worrying about sleeping hot which led me to Coils and springs vs foam and natural cotton and wool fiber beds. After reading your blog I took a step back and did what you said. I researched different mattress galleries in the Nashville area and found a store that was very knowledgeable about sleep health and specialized mattresses. They were having a huge year end clearance sale. I was able to compare Stearns and foster to Sealy and Beautyrest Black as well as some commercial grade Mattress made for the Marriott. I ended up buying a latex mattress with the Marriott Bed Core. I have been sleeping great on it and thanks to your blog I have recommended several of my friends do the same.

This totally makes sense. I have always researched to the point of paralysis but you brought up some great points here. I have been strongly considering buying a new Stearns and Foster Estate mattress for a while now. I have yet to pull the trigger because I just didn’t know if it was the right choice. After reading this article I started research local mattress stores in the Nashville Tn., Murfreesboro Tn., Franklin Tn., and Smyrna Tn. area. I finally decided to pull the band aid off and go for it. I bought the S&F Estate Reserve Luxe. OMG this mattress is plush. I found a great mattress store that had a big sale going on. The sales staff was able to help me find the right one to help with my hip discomfort. I also purchased a Gel Memoryfoam pillow that has helped my wife’s neck in a big way. She use to wake up with headaches because of he neck issues. She hasn’t had any pain for weeks. I was so happy with the service and discount that I bought a guestroom mattress as well. I bought a Crown Jewel Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid. My mother was in town last week and she said it was more comfortable than her Beautyrest Black that cost twice as much. Thank you Mattress Expert

I have purchased mattresses from Mattress Gallery Direct for years because of exactly what this article is about. I love working with the sales staff because of the way they explain things very professionally. I always feel like I am their #1 priority. They are also good about having a great selection of brands such as Stearns and Foster, Sealy, Tempur-Pedic, Beautyrest Simmons, and even more specialty beds from Englander Resort and Hotel Collection, Jamison Marriott Bed, Magniflex, Malouf Wellsville and much more. I feel like all of the research has been taken care of for me which saves me time. They have mattress sets that are firm, medium firm, plush, luxury firm, cushion firm and super plush to give you plenty of options to consider. Because they are a factory direct store with clearance items it is easy to find a great mattress at the best price. When they have a big sale you can count on some big savings. I saved over $1500 on my last purchase of my hybrid mattress. Thanks mattress expert for the nice read.

Great blog! I read this and got inspired to go buy my new mattress. I bought a Sterns and Foster Estate Plush Pillowtop and WOW! I can’t remember the last time I slept this good. I find myself waking up in the same position I fell asleep in. I got a great deal because of a big sale that was going on. I also tried Tempur-Pedic and Sealy. I liked a Beautyrest Black however I ultimatly decided on the Stearns. I am happy. Thanks Mattress Expert for the advice. 🙂

This makes a lot of sense. I usually research until I’m thoroughly cunfused. I took your advice and research mattress companies that were have big sales. Especially the ones having Memorial Day sales because I’ve read that you can get some low prices around that time. I researched the best place to buy a mattress in Murfreesboro and the ones that had the best reviews. I feel like my new Stearns and Foster purchase was well thought out with no buyers remorse because I didn’t let the research cripple my ability to make a decision. Great blog. I look forward to more.

Great read! I found this blog helpful when I was shopping for a new mattress last week. I really wanted to try out a memory foam with cooling gel because I sleep hot. I searched for the best place to buy a gel bed and checked out the local mattress store reviews and websites. I wanted to find a discount or factory direct store with a huge gallery to select from so I didn’t have to visit several stores to see all of my options. I bought a real comfortable gel latex mattress by Jamison bedding company made right here in Franklin tn. I had originally heard about these Jamison Marriott mattresses from my friend who has one. I was able to get a discount and the Memorial Day savings sale price as well. Great experience. Thank you mattress expert for the sound advice.
